A prevernal story from Freja Madsen in Ærø, Denmark.
Johan had texted that he’d be late. Again.
Something about a meeting that went long, something about traffic, ferry schedules. I didn’t answer. I just stared out the window, watching the wind knock petals off the plum tree. White flecks tumbling into the grass like it was still snowing.
Inside, the house was loud in all the wrong ways—chair legs scraping across the floor, a fork dropped, water running too long. But no one really spoke. Not to me.
We were still new at this. His children learning the shape of this house; my son learning the shape of them. All of us trying to live inside the same walls without startling each other.
I had planned the soup for us. Fresh asparagus, young and thin, from the market in Søby. I’d imagined us peeling together at the table—maybe Magnus could snap the ends, Signe could stir. I thought food might do what words couldn’t.
But when I brought out the cutting board, they were both already deep in their tablets, the kind of stillness that doesn’t leave room for anything else. I stood there holding a bunch of green stalks, unsure whether to insist or retreat.
In the end, I made it alone.

The soup came together quickly—onion, garlic, a few soft potatoes, asparagus barely simmered. I added cream because I wanted it to feel indulgent, not sad. I garnished each bowl with a sprig and a drizzle of oil, even though no one noticed.
They ate it, slowly. Magnus asked if there was bread. I said no, maybe tomorrow.
Signe looked at me, then looked away. “It’s fine,” she said. Not good, not bad. Just… fine.
I smiled. Not because I believed her, but because it was the closest we’d come to conversation all day.
Later that night, I washed the soup pot while the cat nudged my ankle. I whispered, Maybe tomorrow they’ll help me peel.
The cat blinked like she already knew better.
